Monday’s Bihar Legislative Council session descended into acrimony as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar sparked controversy by referring to former CM Rabri Devi derogatorily as ‘this girl’ during a raucous debate on law and order. The opposition’s aggressive protests set the stage for one of the most memorable face-offs in recent Bihar political history.
Opposition MLCS, led by Rabri Devi of the RJD, wasted no time in disrupting the house, vociferously protesting what they termed a collapse in public safety across the state. Rising to the challenge, Nitish Kumar delivered a blistering response, lambasting the trio of women agitators. ‘These three women shouting—what do they even understand?’ he declared, zeroing in on Rabri Devi with his pointed ‘Ee jo ladki hai… what does she know?’
Kumar urged the chair to take action against the offenders, while touting his administration’s successes. He underscored Bihar’s rapid advancement, fueled by unwavering support from New Delhi, in stark contrast to the opposition’s record of empty rhetoric. The verbal duel intensified, with both sides trading barbs relentlessly.
Council Chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh’s pleas for order fell on deaf ears, as slogan-shouting continued unabated. In a bid to restore calm, he suspended the sitting until 2:30 PM. Notably, amidst the turmoil, provisions for the 2025 Bihar Municipal Service Rules were formally introduced.
This flare-up follows a pattern, with Nitish recently silencing Tejashwi Yadav in the lower house by branding him a ‘kid’ and invoking Lalu Yadav’s legacy. The repeated public humiliations highlight fractures in Bihar’s opposition unity and bolster Nitish’s image as a no-nonsense leader. With stakes high for upcoming polls, these council clashes may foreshadow broader political realignments in the state.
