Strategic maritime alliances are gaining momentum as Indian and Bahraini leaders commit to stronger defense partnerships. On February 10, Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, India’s naval deputy chief, engaged in productive talks with Bahrain’s top military figure, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, at Rifa Palace. The focus was on reinforcing bilateral relations and naval interoperability.
Navy officials revealed that the dialogue covered critical domains including data sharing protocols, synchronized training operations, infrastructure development, and innovative combat doctrines. Such initiatives are essential for safeguarding vital sea lanes in the Arabian Gulf.
This comes on the heels of Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar’s meeting with Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani earlier this month, setting the stage for global minerals diplomacy. Bahrain’s Republic Day festivities in January were a spectacle, hosting over 400 prominent figures with Al Zayani leading as chief guest. The guest list boasted lawmakers, officials, envoys, maritime force heads, entrepreneurs, chamber executives, society leaders, awardees, and diaspora members.
Adding vibrancy, an ‘Indo-Bahrain Friendship’ art showcase, Hussam Asim’s rap act, and a flute performance of ‘Vande Mataram’ marking its sesquicentennial by the local Uttarakhand Society captivated attendees.
The foundation was laid last November during the fifth India-Bahrain High Joint Commission in New Delhi, co-led by Jaishankar and Al Zayani. They evaluated strides in economic ties, security frameworks, military cooperation, medical advancements, cultural exchanges, and community links, while eyeing potentials in aerospace, digital finance, and cyber defenses. Jaishankar highlighted Bahrain’s GCC role in amplifying regional partnerships and commended efforts for the Indian community’s well-being.
