Delhi’s sports enthusiasts from the Election Commission of India gathered in high spirits as Sports Week 2026 got underway at the Commonwealth Games Complex. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar officially opened the festivities on Monday, blending athletic competition with lessons in democracy.
Addressing the crowd, Kumar noted, ‘The essence of sports – fairness, integrity, and transparency – mirrors the foundations of our elections. Playing keeps us healthy, and everyone should make time for it.’ He stressed the importance of rules in sports and unbiased polls in democracy, inspiring participants to compete with zeal.
The week began dynamically with a 100-meter women’s race under the ‘Run for Democracy’ banner, personally started by the CEC. Tying it all together is the theme ‘Harmony on the Field, Strength in Democracy,’ which links on-field synergy to national empowerment.
Featuring 383 competitors, including 72 female athletes, the event by ECI’s Recreation Club offers 43 events in chess, carrom, table tennis, badminton, cricket, football, and athletics. Track events span 100m through 800m dashes across gender and age divisions.
Designed to enhance team spirit and wellness, the Sports Week is set to deliver a packed schedule of riveting contests, fostering unity and vigor that will resonate long after the final whistle.
