Excitement is building in Barsana for its signature Lathmar Holi, with the town immersed in festive fervor. Glittering decorations line the lanes, and the highlight remains the specially tailored costumes for Radha Rani and Kanha, now in their final stages.
Shop owner Mahesh Kumar Sharma offered a peek into the process. ‘Crafting outfits for both takes roughly six hours, handled by our skilled local tailors,’ he shared. A tradition spanning 30-35 years, these clothes maintain consistent sizing, linking past and present in seamless continuity.
For the Laddu Holi on February 24, Sanjiv Agarwal detailed the opulent preparations. Radha’s attire boasts a darriya lehenga, kanchari, and a bespoke shawl for her and Krishna. The lord’s ensemble features a jama, dupatta, and pajama, with separate sets for sakhis Vishakha and Lalita—eight exquisite pieces courtesy of a generous Delhi Agarwal family.
At its core, Lathmar Holi recreates an ancient tale: Krishna’s visits to Barsana prompted gopis to chase him with sticks in mock anger. Today, Huriarins of Barsana take on the gopis’ role against Nandgaon’s Huriaras. This lively ritual not only preserves folklore but fosters unity and joy, making Barsana a must-visit during Holi season.
