Double Olympic medal-winning wrestler Sushil Kumar is pinning his hopes on the Delhi High Court for bail in the murder case of Sagar Dhankhad, with a hearing set for February 20. After the Rohini Court turned down his application on February 6, Sushil has moved upstairs in the judicial ladder.
The deadly clash occurred in 2021 when Sagar was allegedly lured to Chhatrasal Stadium under false pretenses and brutally beaten with baseball bats and edged tools. The ferocious attack caused fatal injuries to his skull, killing him instantly and injuring two friends badly.
Prosecution claims point to Sushil as the mastermind, leading to charges of murder, plotting crimes, threats, and lethal assaults formalized in 2022. Jailed for nearly three years, Sushil’s repeated bail bids have faltered, save for a temporary medical release last year.
From the mats of glory to the cells of confinement, Sushil’s journey is poignant. He clinched bronze in Beijing 2008’s 66kg freestyle and silver in London 2012, etching his name as India’s pioneering consecutive Olympic wrestling medalist. The High Court’s verdict could redefine his future.
