The Delhi High Court issued a crucial notice to Delhi Police on Olympic wrestler Sushil Kumar’s bail petition in the Sagar Dhankhar murder case, requesting a comprehensive status report. Hearing is set for May 4, as the legal proceedings gain fresh momentum.
At the heart of this controversy is the shocking death of Sagar Dhankhar, a former junior national wrestling champion from Rohtak, Haryana. On May 4, 2021, amid a property tussle at Chhatrasal Stadium parking lot, Sushil Kumar and associates reportedly assaulted Sagar and his friends Sonu and Amit Kumar with deadly force, leading to Sagar’s demise.
Sushil’s 18-day fugitive stint saw him crisscross northern India—through Punjab, UP, Uttarakhand, and Haryana—culminating in his arrest in Mundka, Delhi, where he sought cash and used a borrowed national athlete’s scooty for mobility.
Judicial milestones include the October 2022 charge-framing by Additional Sessions Judge Shivaji Anand under IPC provisions for murder, rioting, and criminal conspiracy against Sushil and 17 others. The Supreme Court, in a bench led by Justice Sanjay Karol, revoked his bail in August 2023 via Sagar’s father’s SLP, mandating surrender.
Following Rohini Court’s denial of regular bail on February 6, Sushil escalated to High Court. This ongoing tussle highlights tensions between sporting legacy and criminal accountability.
As the May 4 date approaches, stakeholders from the wrestling world to legal circles watch closely. The outcome could redefine Sushil’s post-arrest narrative, balancing his past glories against the gravity of the charges.
