In a bold appeal amid rising calls for religious sensitivity, Abu Azmi of the Samajwadi Party has urged Maharashtra’s leadership to grant working hour concessions during Ramadan. The request targets government employees observing the sacred fast.
Detailing his pitch to CM Devendra Fadnavis, Azmi seeks a 4 PM cutoff for Roza-keepers, allowing time for iftar and namaz. Citing examples from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, he argues Maharashtra must align with progressive norms. ‘This respects the month’s spiritual demands, especially with assembly sessions looming,’ Azmi noted.
Azmi painted Ramadan as a cornerstone of Muslim life, where fasting tests discipline and devotion. Such relaxations, he believes, promote harmony without compromising productivity.
Turning to entertainment, Azmi condemned ‘The Kerala Story 2’ as divisive fiction exaggerating ‘love jihad.’ Interfaith romances thrive naturally; if concerns persist, legislate bans on cross-religion marriages. ‘Cinema must unite, not incite hate. Supreme Court should intervene,’ he declared.
He commended Gujarat’s policy requiring parental nod for nuptials, calling it a wise safeguard. Regarding Youth Congress’s AI Summit agitation, Azmi opposed crackdowns, quoting Lohia on the perils of silenced streets.
Azmi’s interventions highlight India’s evolving approach to faith in public life, blending policy advocacy with cultural critique for a more equitable society.
