“The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has approved a proposal to levy a ‘green tax’ on old vehicles which are polluting the environment,” it stated in an announcement.
The proposal will now go to the states for session earlier than it’s formally notified, it added.
Under the scheme, transport autos older than eight years could possibly be charged inexperienced tax on the time of renewal of health certificates on the charge of 10 to 25 per cent of street tax.
“Personal vehicles to be charged green tax at the time of renewal of registration certification after 15 years; public transport vehicles, such as city buses, to be charged lower green tax; higher green tax (50 per cent of road tax) for vehicles being registered in highly polluted cities,” the assertion stated.

The states might be required to arrange state-of-art services for emission monitoring, it added.
Listing the advantages of the inexperienced tax, the ministry stated that it’ll dissuade individuals from utilizing autos which injury the surroundings and encourage them to change to newer, much less polluting autos.
“Green tax will reduce the pollution level, and make the polluter pay for pollution,” it added.
