Towards building a high-capacity, future-proof rail network, Indian Railways has approved multiple Rs 871 crore projects on Thursday, spanning Northern, Southern, and Eastern zones. Goals include upgrading maintenance facilities, reducing high-density crowding, erasing disruptions, and amplifying passenger-freight throughput.
Rajasthan leads with Rs 174.26 crore for Shri Ganganagar’s Phase-I coach depot, designed for modern fleets like Vande Bharat and LHB – a cornerstone in advanced maintenance rollout.
The Bikaner region’s expansion follows with Rs 139.68 crore at Lalgarh (Phase-II), perfectly timed for Vande Bharat and LHB service growth.
Southern highlight: Doubling Kerala’s 21.10 km Turavur-Mararikulam with Rs 450.59 crore. On the bustling Ernakulam-Alappuzha-Kayankulam corridor, it manages intense passenger and port cargo volumes, set to enhance reliability.
In West Bengal’s Asansol, a Rs 107.10 crore 4.75 km Kalipahari bypass under Eastern Railway promises major time savings – 90 minutes for nine freights and 30 for eight passengers daily. Yard decongestion will improve operations, capacity, and efficiency in this vital Eastern hub.
These forward-thinking approvals reflect Railways’ strategic vision, fortifying India’s transport lifeline against future challenges.
