Tomorrow, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurates a beacon of hope: the first phase of Wayanad Model Township, born from the July 30, 2024, landslides that erased four villages, took over 200 lives, and left 32 missing amid massive destruction.
The government’s 299 crore investment on 49 hectares – bought for 44.33 crore post-legal hurdles under disaster norms – delivers 178 resilient homes in phase one. A model unit rose in 105 days, each house at 1,000 sq ft featuring dual bedrooms and baths, versatile living spaces, study nooks, kitchens, workspaces, and patios, all quake- and flood-proof.
Electrification is top-tier: three-phase lines, BLDC fans, LEDs, with slots for AC and inverters. The township’s ecosystem includes 11.42 km roads and bridges, underground electricity, drainage, sewage plants, 1-lakh-litre water tanks, CCTV, and waste systems.
Solar innovation leads with 2 kW rooftop panels per home under net metering, forming Wayanad’s premier residential solar hub. Upcoming additions: community halls, clinics, anganwadis, bazaars, amphitheaters, play zones, and football pitches.
This project underscores Kerala’s mastery in disaster response, blending cutting-edge tech, green energy, and social infrastructure to empower survivors. It’s more than relocation – it’s a blueprint for future-proof communities in disaster-prone India.
