The West Bengal administration is leaving no stone unturned for secure elections. Hours after Sunday’s final voter list release following SIR, four districts were declared highly sensitive due to anticipated unrest. Senior IPS officers were swiftly posted to maintain order in these frontier zones adjacent to Bangladesh.
Spotlight falls on Maldah, Murshidabad, Nadia, and Cooch Behar. These districts, split between north and south Bengal, have histories of tension, especially minority-heavy Maldah and Murshidabad.
Officers took over Saturday 2 PM sharp. In Maldah, ADG Ajay Nand (Anti-Terrorism) leads with ATF and police support.
Cooch Behar gets DIG Sunil Kumar Yadav (Coastal Security), teamed with RAF and district personnel.
Murshidabad’s watch is DIG Rashid Muneer Khan (HQ), assisted by two CIF jawans and local cops.
Nadia assigns IG Gaurav Sharma (Traffic), with dual police backups.
Reinforcements pour in: 240 CAPF units from Friday, deploying March 1—110 CRPF, 55 BSF, 21 CISF, 27 ITBP, 27 SSB. Pre-poll schedule, this is paired with another 240 companies from March 10.
This multi-layered security blanket aims to neutralize threats, guaranteeing voter safety and democratic integrity in high-risk areas.
