Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ribbon-cutting at Micron’s ATMP plant in Sanand, Gujarat, has sparked jubilation across India’s tech industry. The Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) extended its congratulations to the government and Micron, terming it a cornerstone in the nation’s chip journey.
IESA Chairman Ashok Chandak, on-site for the unveiling, proclaimed: ‘This isn’t merely a facility launch; it’s India’s resounding entry into elite semiconductor manufacturing.’ He lauded PM Modi’s vision: ‘India is ready, reliable, and delivers results,’ reflecting unshakeable resolve for a premier chip ecosystem.
Micron’s $2.75 billion (Rs 22,516 crore) outlay ranks among the biggest foreign semiconductor investments in India, building on its design center footprint. The plant will churn out DRAM, NAND, and SSDs—backbone technologies for AI, supercomputing, mobiles, data hubs, autos, and future digital networks.
Memory production’s rarity globally amplifies its importance. Amid AI boom and chain disruptions, IESA views this as a prescient, revolutionary step.
Integrating with Micron’s designs and imminent ATMP projects, the initiative will exponentially enhance India’s capacities, spurring innovation-driven output and exports.
Anticipated employment includes 5,000 direct and 15,000+ indirect jobs, nurturing expertise. This achievement validates India’s semiconductor policy, propelling the country toward global leadership in electronics fabrication.
