On the cusp of International Women’s Day, Tamenglong in Manipur orchestrated a memorable empowerment extravaganza on March 7 at Lower Ground. Central to the occasion was the unveiling of the ASMITA League, a nationwide athletics drive to propel rural girls and women toward sporting excellence and careers, echoing PM Narendra Modi’s commitment to female athletic prowess.
Backed by MY Bharat (Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports), Tamenglong’s Socio-Economic Action Trust, Khelo India, and district sports office, this initiative will engage 250+ sites countrywide. By prioritizing track sports, it fosters self-belief and talent discovery, with Tamenglong’s event uniquely integrating empowerment dialogues and health services.
The ceremony began prayerfully with Mrs. Ajin Bariam, followed by Soihium SHG’s melodies, hosted adeptly by Miss Guikhanliu Malingmei. Chief guest and Youth Officer Chonthuignam Dangmei inspired with her address: sports build not just bodies but unbreakable minds and self-sufficient lives. She called on girls to pursue athletics professionally.
A focused session on women’s roles featured church leader Mrs. Ening R. Panmei, who affirmed women as the pillars upholding family, society, and country—essential for collective advancement.
Complementing the empowerment theme, a free AYUSH camp provided on-the-spot checks and guidance in traditional healing, yoga, and Ayurveda for comprehensive participant care.
Mrs. Asongdin Kamei extended thanks, Mrs. Difunliu Pamei closed with prayer. Athletic showdowns followed: thrilling 100m-400m races segmented by age—U13, 13-18, 18+—where local talents shone. Team games like tug-of-war and vibrant folk dances amplified the festive, unifying vibe.
Tamenglong’s celebration exemplified how sports and health can galvanize women, heralding a brighter, more inclusive future in Indian athletics.
