Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday coincides with a period of remarkable transformation in India’s electronics sector. Since 2014, the government’s policies have focused on fostering domestic manufacturing and innovation, leading to the emergence of India as a major global hub for mobile phone production.

The ‘Make in India’ initiative and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme have been instrumental in driving this growth. These policies have encouraged both domestic and international companies to invest in India’s manufacturing capabilities. The PLI scheme specifically incentivized electronics companies, thereby attracting major tech firms like Apple and Samsung to establish manufacturing plants within the country.

These strategic efforts have yielded impressive results. India has experienced a substantial increase in mobile phone production and exports. The number of mobile manufacturing factories has increased dramatically, and exports have witnessed exponential growth. India is now a major player in the global mobile market, meeting both domestic and international demand.

The positive impact of the growth in the mobile phone manufacturing industry extends beyond economic gains, creating millions of employment opportunities. The value of mobile phone manufacturing has skyrocketed from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to ₹4,22,000 crore in FY24. Exports have also dramatically increased, which were negligible in 2014, and have now crossed ₹1,29,000 crore.
