AI in India: OpenAI’s Investment and Government Initiatives

The Indian government’s IndiaAI mission is fueling rapid growth in the AI sector. OpenAI has announced the opening of its first office in India. Ashwini Vaishnaw stated India’s unique role in leading the next phase of AI development. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, acknowledged the rapid adoption of AI in India, highlighting a fourfold increase in ChatGPT users over the last year. The IndiaAI mission aims to create a comprehensive computing infrastructure and support AI initiatives. India is scheduled to host the AI Impact Summit in February 2026.
