AIIMS Delhi is redefining surgical excellence, crossing the 1,000 robotic surgery mark in a mere 13 months, as revealed Tuesday. This accomplishment spotlights the institute’s drive to integrate robotics into everyday public healthcare.

Launched just over a year back to conquer tough surgical terrains, the robotic platform has excelled in diverse operations. Highlights include pancreaticoduodenectomy, gastrectomy, esophagectomy, colectomy, anterior resection for gastrointestinal malignancies, kidney transplantation, and precise minimally invasive excisions for endocrine tumors across thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and pancreas in hepato-biliary surgeries.

Unlike the steady robotics adoption in private metro hospitals for urology and gynae over ten years, public general surgery has been slower. AIIMS counters this, extending premium tech benefits to varied patient demographics affordably.

Department head Professor Sunil Chumber highlighted the educational impact: ‘With 100+ residents training here, robotic access during residency matches international benchmarks, revolutionizing our curriculum.’ Key patient perks? Minimal blood loss, reduced stays, rapid healing.

Dr. Mohit Joshi, Additional Professor, praised the initiative: ‘India’s top institute leads innovations. Our trained surgeons thrive in a dedicated robotic OT, delivering superb outcomes.’ As AIIMS scales this success, it paves the way for nationwide robotic surgery proliferation in public systems, enhancing care quality and training.
