Strengthening defense cooperation is a key priority for India, and a recent proposal to supply Brazil with the Akash missile system underscores this commitment. The offer was extended during crucial bilateral engagements in New Delhi, where Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met with Brazil’s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Defence Minister Jose Mucio Monteiro Filho.

Discussions were comprehensive, aiming to explore avenues for a deeper strategic partnership, with a strong emphasis on collaborative ventures in defense manufacturing and technological advancement. The objective is to identify specific areas where joint production and innovation can serve the security needs of both nations.

This initiative aims to foster a more integrated defense industrial ecosystem between India and Brazil. Both nations are keen to leverage their respective strengths to co-develop defense capabilities.

The Akash missile system is a cornerstone of India’s air defense capabilities, developed entirely through indigenous efforts by DRDO. This medium-range surface-to-air missile is engineered to counter threats from aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles up to 30 kilometers away and at altitudes of 18 kilometers. It employs a solid rocket motor for propulsion and features advanced radar and guidance systems for efficient target engagement. As a proven asset in India’s military, and with ongoing upgrades like the Akash-NG offering improved performance, it stands as a significant export opportunity for India, signaling its growing role in the global defense market.
