The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has seen a surge in casualties, with Ukraine reporting 990 Russian soldiers killed in a single day. This devastating figure precedes a scheduled meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where discussions are anticipated to focus on ending the conflict. It is speculated that Putin may announce a ceasefire during the meeting. Since the commencement of the war on February 24, 2022, Russia has suffered substantial losses, with a total of 1,067,100 casualties.

Russia’s military losses are also extensive, with 11,104 tanks, 23,130 armored fighting vehicles, 31,458 artillery pieces, 1,466 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,207 air defense systems, 421 aircraft, 40 helicopters, 51,043 UAVs, 3,558 cruise missiles, and 28 ships lost.

President Zelensky stated that Russia is suffering three times more casualties than Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on August 12 that Russia was losing roughly 1,000 soldiers each day, which is approximately three times more than Ukraine’s losses. Zelensky mentioned that on August 11, Russia’s losses included 531 soldiers killed, 428 wounded, and 9 captured, while Ukraine’s losses were 340 soldiers, with 18 killed, 243 wounded, and 79 missing.

Trump and Putin are scheduled to meet in Alaska on August 15. Their last meeting took place at the G-20 summit in Japan in 2019. The upcoming meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, will have the goal of ending the war in Ukraine. Trump had previously mediated three meetings between Russia and Ukraine, but those discussions failed.

In this conflict, Russia has experienced approximately twice the number of casualties compared to Ukraine. The current status of the war favors Russia. The Kremlin might leverage the Alaska summit to redirect attention away from peace negotiations with Ukraine and towards the relationship between Russia and the US. This strategy could potentially persuade the Trump administration to consider economic deals with Moscow.
