The world is keenly focused on the planned meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska, as it’s viewed as a pivotal moment in the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Both Putin and Trump have refrained from publicly detailing the summit’s agenda. However, Trump’s actions have caused concern for Ukrainian President Zelensky, who opposes any concessions regarding territory.

The scheduled meeting between former US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 is attracting considerable attention. This meeting is especially significant given that Trump was issuing an ultimatum to Putin just a week before, threatening further economic sanctions if the Ukraine war did not cease. A notable shift occurred with the last-minute visit of Trump’s special envoy, Witkoff, to Russia. The fact that Zelensky has been excluded from this discussion regarding Ukraine raises concerns. The question is, can an agreement be reached without Zelensky?

International media outlets are closely following the proposed Alaska meeting. Given Trump’s and Putin’s positions, the outcome remains uncertain. The situation in Ukraine and Russia is becoming increasingly complicated. According to Damien D. Breton Gordon, a former British Army officer and military analyst, the summit itself is a major victory. He believes that Putin’s actions do not suggest he wants peace. The war is to bring Ukraine under control. Trump is aware that the conflict will not end this way, and he now thinks Putin is playing games. In the Trump-Putin talks, the victory will go to the one who has a stronger position, and Zelensky will have a significant role.

**Donald Trump:** Trump wants to use economic sanctions and tariffs to pressure Putin. He is open to agreeing to some of Putin’s demands to bring peace, although Putin’s determination is a major obstacle. Trump is aware that Putin’s response to ultimatums has been to increase attacks on Ukraine.

**Vladimir Putin:** Putin’s power stems from his strategy and military capabilities, allowing him to directly fight Ukraine and indirectly fight Europe and the US. His main weakness is economic sanctions, which Trump can leverage. Putin knows that Russia’s economy relies heavily on oil revenue, potentially leading to a more flexible approach to peace.

**Volodymyr Zelensky:** Zelensky could be a wildcard in this meeting. There’s no confirmation of whether Trump has consulted Zelensky about the meeting. Rumors suggest that Trump may have promised Putin concessions, including a possible land exchange, which Zelensky opposes. Zelensky’s greatest strength is his unwavering support for the Ukrainian people, and the backing of NATO and European nations is providing support. However, Trump’s unilateral approach is his weakness. If Trump and Putin come to an agreement, Trump may pressure Zelensky to accept it, potentially leaving Zelensky with little choice but to agree.
