Allahabad High Court Stays Probe into UP Madrassas, Seeks Government Reply

The Allahabad High Court has put a hold on the investigation concerning 558 madrassas in Uttar Pradesh, providing temporary relief to the institutions. The court halted the investigation being conducted by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW). These madrassas are government-aided and receive financial assistance. The court has requested a response from the government within four weeks.
The investigation was ordered by the EOW following directives from the National Human Rights Commission. The High Court, however, granted temporary relief to the petitioners, halting the EOW’s investigation into the 558 grant-in-aid madrassas.
The petitioners are challenging the orders issued by the National Human Rights Commission on February 28, 2025, April 23, 2025, and June 11, 2025. These orders mandated the Economic Offences Wing to conduct the investigation. The petition seeks to revoke this order issued by the commission.
The court has ordered all respondents to submit their counter-affidavits within four weeks. The case has been scheduled to be heard before the appropriate bench on November 17, 2025. The court further stated that the directives of the National Human Rights Commission and the government will remain on hold until further notice. The order was delivered on the petition of the Teachers Association of Madaris Arabia, Varanasi, and two other parties, by a double bench consisting of Justice Saral Srivastava and Justice Amitabh Kumar Rai.
