Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, has strongly criticized the Emergency of 1975, calling it an era of injustice driven by the Congress party’s quest for power. He stated that the current government observes June 25 as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to remind younger generations of the negative impact of this period on Indian democracy. In a statement, Shah highlighted the suffering of the people during the Emergency. He accused the Congress of attacking democratic institutions, suppressing the press, and imprisoning political opponents. The Union Cabinet observed a two-minute silence to honor those who suffered, and a resolution was passed to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, which was described as an attack on the Constitution. The resolution also highlighted India’s continued commitment to democratic values.
