The upcoming Asia Cup 2025, starting on September 9th, is generating significant buzz, with team selection being a key focus. Krishnamachari Srikkanth, a prominent figure from the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian team, has shared his views on the tournament.
Srikkanth’s opinion includes his preferred opening combination, which omits Sanju Samson. He advocates for a new opening partnership, comprising Abhishek Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, and Sai Sudarshan. This unconventional suggestion has become a talking point within the cricketing world.
On his YouTube channel, ‘Chikki Chika,’ Srikkanth clearly stated his preference for Abhishek Sharma as the first opening batsman and suggested pairing him with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudarshan, or Vaibhav Suryavanshi. This decision reflects a strategic emphasis on emerging talent.
The rationale behind excluding Sanju Samson from the opening role stems from observations of his struggles against short balls in the T20 series against England. Srikkanth noted Samson’s difficulties in that series. ‘Sanju Samson didn’t perform well against the short ball against England. In my opinion, it’s difficult for him to open. If I were a selector, Abhishek Sharma would be my first choice. For the second choice, I would choose one of Vaibhav Suryavanshi or Sai Sudarshan,’ he said.
Additionally, Srikkanth emphasized Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s impressive performance, supporting his inclusion in the 15-member squad. He highlighted Sai Sudarshan’s Orange Cap and the strong performances of Yashasvi Jaiswal, suggesting that one of these three players should open with Abhishek Sharma. The former cricketer also proposed choosing between Samson and Jitesh Sharma for the wicketkeeper-batsman position.
