Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian to reach the International Space Station, made a powerful statement that is now included in a Class 5 NCERT textbook. The statement, expressing a vision of a borderless world, can be found in the Environmental Studies book, ‘Our Wondrous World,’ within the chapter ‘Earth, Our Shared Home.’ The quote originated from a dialogue between Shukla and then Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking about his experience from space, Shukla highlighted the absence of national boundaries, emphasizing the common humanity of all people. Shukla’s expedition to the ISS, lasting 18 days, made him the first Indian in more than forty years to visit the orbital outpost. The textbook is aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 and aims to integrate Science, Social Science, and Environmental Studies. The textbook includes real-world connections, stories, and interactive activities. The curriculum involves themes such as a digital address system (DIGIPIN), geographical studies, and the stories of inspiring national figures, aimed at promoting observation, inquiry, and a comprehensive understanding of the world. The book further encourages exploration and reflection on India’s diversity and the interconnectedness of the planet.
