Australia has announced its intention to recognize Palestine as a state, joining the UK and Canada. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese indicated that this recognition will be formalized at the UN General Assembly in September. This move follows a trend among several nations to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Albanese explained that the two-state solution is the only path to lasting peace in Gaza. Australia will continue to push for this solution to establish peace. This decision was made in response to growing calls from inside and outside his government, influenced by the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Australia’s recognition of Palestine will be subject to certain terms.

In addition, the Australian government is criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans for new military actions in Gaza.
