Heavy damage to banana crops due to hailstorm. Many hectares of banana crop fell in Khaknar. Assurance of starting survey work of damage.
Naidunia Representative, Burhanpur. The storm accompanied by hailstorm and rain that hit the district on Friday night has once again caused major damage to banana farmers. Banana crop of several hectares planted in Khaknar area has fallen in the fields. Due to which farmers have suffered a loss of lakhs of rupees. It started raining around 9 pm on Friday night, which continued till late night.
According to the Superintendent of Land Records, an average rainfall of 8.4 mm has been recorded in Burhanpur and 4 mm in Khaknar. Till now the district has received 891.4 mm rainfall. The average rainfall of the district is 823.6 mm. Last year, during the same period, there was 1076.2 mm rainfall.
Farmers told that due to the rain, first the soil of the fields became wet and then due to the strong wind, the banana plants were ground to the ground. Even before this, crops had been damaged due to rain. After the end of the rainy season, farmers are facing losses due to untimely rains.
Damage to soybean and cotton also
Earlier last week too, there had been light rainfall in the district, due to which soybean and cotton crops kept in the fields were damaged. At that time the banana crop was saved due to no wind. Ten centers have been set up in the district for the purchase of soybean, but due to high humidity and blackening of the grains, farmers fear that they will get less price this time.
According to Deputy Director Agriculture MS Devke, farmers are being informed about the instructions issued regarding the purchase of soybean by setting up chaupals in the villages. So that they do not have to return from the procurement centres.
Survey work has not started yet
The district administration has not yet started a survey of the damage caused to the banana crop after soybean, cotton and maize. Officials say that the loss has been very less while farmers say that the loss has been huge.
MLA went to the fields and took stock
On Saturday, Nepanagar MLA Manju Rajendra Dadu along with administrative officials inspected the damage caused to crops due to storm and hailstorm. Banana crop has suffered major damage in Shekhapur and surrounding villages of Khaknar area.
MLA Manju Dadu took stock of the affected crops in villages Shekhapur, Rangai, Nimandad, Mohangarh. Along with discussing with Collector Bhavya Mittal and other departmental officials, he also informed Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and demanded compensation.
