As the body of Sharif Osman Hadi arrives in Dhaka, the Bangladesh government is urging citizens to resist violence instigated by ‘a few fringe elements.’ Hadi, a significant leader in the ongoing protests against Sheikh Hasina, died after being shot in the head during a recent campaign. His death has triggered widespread unrest, with protesters blocking roads and damaging property, including newspaper offices. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed to strategic locations across the capital to maintain order. Demonstrations have intensified, particularly at the Shahbagh intersection, where activists are demanding justice for Hadi and calling for a change in government. Hadi, who was shot on December 12, received medical treatment in Dhaka before being airlifted to Singapore, where he later passed away. Anti-India slogans have also been heard during protests. Incidents of vandalism, including targeting the Indian Assistant High Commissioner’s residence in Chattogram, have been reported. The Chief Adviser has declared a day of state mourning. The government has also condemned the lynching of a Hindu man in Mymensingh, assuring that perpetrators of such heinous crimes will not escape punishment.
