Following the violence that erupted in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, the administration has increased security and implemented a temporary internet shutdown ahead of Friday prayers. The 48-hour suspension of internet services is designed to prevent the exploitation of social media to spread misinformation and incite unrest. Details from the Uttar Pradesh Home Department specify that mobile internet, broadband, and SMS services will be unavailable in the district from October 2nd to October 4th. The primary intention behind the shutdown is to maintain peace and public order. In addition to the internet restrictions, officials organized a flag march across the city on Thursday to display the heightened security measures. These actions are in response to the violent events of September 26th, when approximately 2,000 individuals gathered outside a mosque after Friday prayers to protest the ‘I Love Muhammad’ posters, which led to confrontations.
