    The decision to use a Made-in-China Hongqi car for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s transport in Tianjin for the SCO Summit is more than just a logistical detail. It’s a statement. The Hongqi, President Xi Jinping’s preferred vehicle, appeared during Modi’s visit. The Hongqi L5 is a high-end luxury sedan, distinguished by its retro design. The car is equipped with lavish interiors, made with wood, leather and, in certain variants, gold and crystal. The car’s powertrain is powered by a 4.0L Twin-Turbo V8 or a 6.0L V12 engine. The price of the saloon varies by generation and market and can exceed $680,000. Chinese text on the steering wheel highlights the car’s cultural significance. The use of the car could signify China’s interest in developing stronger relationships with India. The Hongqi brand belongs to China FAW Group, a state-owned automobile manufacturer that was established in 1953. The group was supported by the Soviet Union, suggesting historical ties that could inform future collaborations between Russia, India, and China.
