Patna’s skyline gained renewed attention as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar made a high-profile visit to Golghar, the colossal granary that’s captivated visitors for over two centuries.

Overlooking the majestic Ganga, Golghar’s distinctive architecture and tragic history drew the CM’s keen interest. Built post the devastating 1770 famine that claimed ten million lives, the structure symbolized British administrative innovation – though ironically, its one-way staircase design prevented effective grain storage.

Kumar’s inspection revealed both achievements and challenges in the Rs 50 crore restoration project launched two years ago. While external facelifting progressed well, internal conservation lagged. He directed formation of a dedicated monitoring committee with weekly reviews.

Among specific instructions: seismic retrofitting given Patna’s earthquake-prone location, digital ticketing systems, and AR/VR experiences recreating 18th-century Patna. ‘We preserve Golghar so youth connect with their roots,’ the CM emphasized.

The visit aligns with Bihar’s Heritage Policy 2023 aiming to develop 50 such circuits statewide. Officials disclosed plans for Golghar Night Festival featuring classical music against the illuminated monument.

Business leaders see huge potential in heritage tourism generating Rs 5000 crore annually. With infrastructure upgrades like cruise connectivity and homestays, Golghar could emerge as Bihar’s Taj Mahal equivalent.

This hands-on governance approach reinforces Nitish Kumar’s image as a detail-oriented administrator committed to sustainable development.
