The Supreme Court has delivered another significant pronouncement concerning the Bihar SIR. During the Monday hearing, the court made clear that it could not issue a partial judgment in the case, and that any definitive ruling would be binding throughout the country. The court acknowledged the compliance of the Election Commission of India, a constitutional authority, with laws and mandated regulations in Bihar. The court further stated that the entire Bihar SIR process would be nullified if any irregularities are identified in the Election Commission’s approach at any stage.

This statement carries particular weight given the Election Commission’s recent meeting on September 10th, followed by reports that an all-India voter list revision campaign may be conducted in the upcoming months, as five states are scheduled to hold legislative assembly elections next year.

The Supreme Court has set October 7th for the next hearing on the Bihar SIR. The date was decided after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defense. The announcement of the Bihar election dates is expected after the hearing.

Moreover, the Supreme Court has taken action regarding the directive to incorporate Aadhaar cards as the 12th documented requirement in the Bihar SIR. A notice has been issued in response to a petition filed on September 8th requesting the order’s withdrawal. During the September 8th hearing, the court clarified that an Aadhaar card does not function as proof of citizenship. Additionally, the Election Commission is authorized to verify the authenticity of presented Aadhaar cards when a voter submits them for inclusion in the electoral rolls.
