A political storm has erupted around Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav following his controversial comments on Diwali expenditures, just days before the festival of lights. Yadav, speaking at a public forum, questioned the necessity of spending on traditional lamps and candles, proposing that India adopt more elaborate, modern lighting displays akin to Christmas illuminations seen worldwide.

His statements have been sharply rebuked by the BJP, with leaders accusing Yadav of showing disrespect towards Hindu traditions and cultural heritage. The party alleges that Yadav’s comments indicate a preference for foreign customs over India’s own deeply rooted festivals.

Yadav’s comments included, “Why do we have to spend money on lamps and candles and put so much thought into it? We will make sure that there are more beautiful lights.” He also suggested learning from the extended Christmas light displays observed globally.

Responding forcefully on social media, BJP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal criticized Yadav for seemingly praising Christmas while questioning Diwali spending. Bansal accused the SP leader of disrespecting the traditions of a billion Hindus and promoting foreign festivals over indigenous ones. He questioned the logic of Hindu society being told to learn from Christianity when Diwali has a history stretching back millennia.

Bansal also leveled accusations of corruption and religious insensitivity against Yadav, suggesting that his administration had facilitated illegal religious conversions. He implied that Yadav was bothered by the growing celebrations and religious fervor in places like Ayodhya, even using a dismissive nickname, ‘Tipu,’ to attack his perceived hypocrisy regarding Diwali.

Further criticism came from Madhya Pradesh minister Vishwas Sarang, who questioned Yadav’s perspective on Diwali traditions. Sarang controversially suggested that Yadav might be more appropriately named ‘Antony’ or ‘Akbar,’ implying his views were alien to Indian culture. He also alluded to past grievances, linking Yadav’s stance to alleged actions against Ram devotees and proposing an investigation into the family’s religious affiliations. Sarang highlighted the impact on local artisans, stating that Yadav’s remarks were an insult to the potter community who play a vital role in Diwali celebrations through their handmade diyas.
