Tensions simmer between India and the US over trade tariffs and policy differences, but BJP leader Ram Madhav remains bullish on their trajectory. In Washington at an OFBJP event, the former party general secretary and India Foundation president described the rough patch as ephemeral, underpinned by profound, lasting strategic convergence.

High hopes greeted Trump’s second inauguration in India, only for reality to diverge sharply. Madhav likened this to widespread international encounters with Trump’s maverick governance modus operandi.

Trade negotiations, ongoing for nearly a year between commerce ministries, neared fruition before stalling. ‘Linking commerce to global politics exacerbates issues,’ Madhav analyzed. He advocated decoupling these spheres.

Asserting India’s position on Pakistan as purely bilateral, Madhav noted explicit communications to the US against third-party roles. ‘India treats such matters gravely—no shortcuts via informal channels,’ he emphasized, stressing the need for thorough deliberations on trade deals.

No desire exists to undermine ties, Madhav clarified. Referencing Vajpayee’s foundational role in contemporary relations—declaring both nations natural partners—he highlighted the enduring framework beyond any single leader. The vibrant Indian diaspora continues bolstering these connections.

Madhav portrayed current frictions as personality clashes, not policy rifts, transient in nature. India’s commitment to fortifying US partnerships endures, poised for renewed momentum and collaborative triumphs ahead.
