BMW is set to integrate natural fibre composites into its future production models, emphasizing its commitment to sustainability. The BMW Group has invested significant time in developing these composites from organic materials, which have met the demanding requirements for roof structures in homologation tests. The development of lightweight composites made from flax-based materials was a collaborative effort with Bcomp, a Swiss cleantech firm. This partnership aims to diminish future CO2e emissions. BMW i Ventures, the company’s venture capital arm, maintains a stake in Bcomp. The use of natural fibres is essential for reducing CO2 emissions and minimizing the carbon footprint. These composites are suitable for use in visible interior and exterior components. Replacing the standard carbon fibre parts with these new materials in the forthcoming BMW portfolio could cut overall emissions by approximately 40%. These parts have already proven their durability, having been used in BMW M Motorsport, including the 2019 Formula E season, the BMW M4 DTM, and the M4 GT4. BMW has been an official partner for BMW M Motorsport for the BMW M4 GT4 since 2022. The materials will be evaluated under tough conditions during the BMW GT4 24-hour race at the Nürburgring to assess their ability to withstand impacts and mechanical stress. Components from BMW M Motorsport and Bcomp will also be integrated into forthcoming BMW M series vehicles.
