Verena Akram, mother of Naveed Akram, one of the individuals accused in the Bondi Beach terror attack, has strongly defended her son, asserting he is not capable of violence. She described the 24-year-old as a quiet and disciplined young man who led a simple, routine life and avoided problematic company. Her last communication with Naveed, mere hours before the Sunday attack, found him in Jervis Bay with his father for a brief respite.

During their call, Naveed shared details of his activities, stating, “Mum, I just went for a swim. I went scuba diving. We’re going to eat now, and we’ll stay indoors because it’s very hot.” The family had been informed of the father and son’s plan for a fishing trip on Australia’s South Coast.

Ms. Akram revealed that her son was unemployed and lived an unassuming life. She vehemently dismissed any suggestions of his connection to extremist groups or violent actions, emphasizing his lack of firearms and his restricted social life, which revolved around work, home, and exercise. She praised him as an ideal son.

The horrifying incident occurred during a Hanukkah gathering on Bondi Beach, claiming 15 lives. Naveed Akram was arrested at the scene, while his father, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, was killed by police during an engagement, increasing the total death toll to 16. Authorities indicated that the victims died due to the unexpected and savage nature of the assault. Naveed Akram is reported to be of Pakistani nationality.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack unequivocally, calling it “pure evil,” an act of antisemitism, and terrorism on Australian soil.
