Aizawl witnessed a pivotal moment in sustainable development on Monday when Chief Minister Lalduhoma laid the cornerstone for the 24 MW Tuirini Mini Hydropower Project. Financed via a loan from the New Development Bank (NDB), the 676.98 crore rupee venture on the Tuirini River will enhance Mizoram’s power infrastructure significantly.

Addressing the gathering, Lalduhoma showcased progress: the recent 10 MW Thenzawl Solar inauguration and 20% completion of the 5 MW Sumsuih solar plant—both fully state-owned. He outlined challenges and solutions for the Tuivai project, reduced from 210 MW to 132 MW to avoid flooding issues in Manipur.

The Economic Affairs Department greenlit DPR, tenders, developer selection, and agreements, funding a prestigious firm with 2.3 crore for advisory services. DPR is ready; construction hinges on financial finalization. Meanwhile, Talawng Hydro’s geo-investigations proceed, with DPR due in September 2026.

Pushing solar frontiers, EOIs target five locations like Hnathial, Tlabung Tlang, and Lamjaval. 75 gram panchayats’ land pledges support phased solar farms. Statewide, 791 rooftops generate 2.62 MW, backed by central (60%) and state (20-25%) subsidies.

Mizoram’s energy roadmap, blending hydro prowess with solar innovation, positions it as a northeastern leader in renewables, promising reliable power, jobs, and ecological harmony.
