BSE Sensex Falls 757 Points: IT Sector's 4% Plunge Steals Spotlight

Amid swirling uncertainties in the Middle East, Indian stock markets surrendered gains on Wednesday, capping the session with significant losses. BSE Sensex closed 756.84 points lower at 78,516.49, reflecting a 0.95% decline. Nifty 50 lagged behind, dropping 198.50 points or 0.81% to 24,378.10. Intraday, Sensex fluctuated wildly, opening at 79,019.34 and bottoming out at 78,442.30 after a 831-point slide. Nifty commenced at 24,470.85, reaching a low of 24,352.90—a 224-point retreat. Mid and small-cap indices provided some relief, with Nifty Smallcap 100 climbing 1.13% and Midcap 100 edging up 0.19%. Sectors like FMCG, media, realty, metals, PSU banks, and pharmaceuticals ended in green territory. Conversely, Nifty IT tanked 3.89%, emerging as the day's weakest link. Financial services slipped 0.87%, private banks 0.73%, and autos 0.66%. Nifty 50 toppers included Tata Consumer Products, HUL, NTPC, Trent, Hindalco, Adani Enterprises, Eternal, and Nestle India, posting 1-3% advances. HCL Tech led the losers with a brutal 10.74% drop. Infosys, M&M, TCS, Tech Mahindra, Bajaj Auto, Max Health, HDFC Life, and HDFC Bank followed with 1-3% losses. The market's caution is linked to US-Iran dynamics: President Trump extended the ceasefire indefinitely while maintaining the Hormuz Strait blockade. VP JD Vance postponed his Pakistan trip aimed at peace talks. Such developments threaten energy markets and global shipping. Investors are prudent, balancing risks with India's resilient economy. Watch for central bank signals and corporate results to gauge recovery potential.
