Delhi’s Hydrogen Bus Launch: IOCL-DMRC Green Mobility Milestone
1 min readHydrogen is fueling a cleaner tomorrow in Delhi, thanks to a pioneering collaboration between Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Two state-of-the-art hydrogen buses have hit the roads, signaling a shift towards sustainable public transport.
IOCL Director (Refinery) Arvind Kumar shared details on Friday, confirming the buses’ deployment on the Central Secretariat-Kartavya Bhawan route. ‘This is an excellent initiative for green transport. The hydrogen is domestically produced at our Faridabad facility,’ he said.
The beauty of these buses lies in their fuel cell system: hydrogen reacts with oxygen to produce electricity, with water as the sole byproduct. No tailpipe emissions mean a massive win for environmental health in pollution-plagued Delhi.
IOCL isn’t stopping here. Expansion plans include a new 10 KTA green hydrogen plant at Panipat Refinery, currently under development. Kumar projected optimism: ‘As economies of scale kick in, we’ll integrate this into wider transport networks.’
Aligning with national priorities under PM Narendra Modi, the project champions advanced, low-carbon tech. IOCL currently runs 15 such buses in pilot phases across the country, testing real-world viability.
This DMRC tie-up exemplifies how public-private partnerships can drive innovation. By prioritizing hydrogen mobility, India positions itself as a global leader in clean energy transitions. Expect more buses and routes soon, as the ecosystem matures, bringing breathable air closer to urban dwellers.
