In a development closely watched by markets and households alike, India's retail inflation rate for April stood at 3.48 percent year-on-year, marginally above March's 3.40 percent figure, per official data from the Ministry of Statistics. The rural-urban divide was evident, with countryside inflation at 3.74 percent versus 3.16 percent in cities. Food inflation jumped to 4.20 percent nationally, from 3.87 percent previously—rural at 4.26 percent, urban 4.10 percent. Price declines offered some relief: potatoes tumbled 23.69 percent, onions 17.67 percent, automobiles like cars and jeeps 7.12 percent, pulses such as peas and chickpeas 6.75 percent, and air conditioners 5.06 percent. Conversely, silver jewelry prices exploded by 144.34 percent, coconuts by 44.55 percent, gold and platinum jewelry by 40.72 percent, tomatoes by 35.28 percent, and cauliflower by 25.58 percent.
