NITI Aayog forecasts a $8.1 billion export windfall for India’s sports equipment industry, promising 5.4 million extra jobs in MSMEs by 2036. This opportunity arises from reshaped supply chains, imminent global events, and policies favoring exports over imports.

The comprehensive report ‘Realizing India’s Sports Goods Manufacturing Export Potential’ notes India’s 2024 exports of $275 million—cricket gear, fitness products, and balls—representing only 0.5% of the $52 billion global total, expanding at 2.4% annually.

Market projections are staggering: $140 billion today to $283 billion in 2036. Dominated by fitness/strength (33%) and ball games (32%), followed by athletic (14%) and racket/net (10%) gear. Top exports: gym/athletics (27%), cycles (17%), then pads, nets, bats, golf.

Beyond China’s lead, the US, Taiwan, Germany, and Vietnam’s shares open doors. India must overcome cost hurdles, partner with top brands, revamp production units, and boost global visibility.

Key to victory: integrated policies, robust ties between government, businesses, and sports entities, and persistent barrier removal. This blueprint could catapult India’s sports sector onto the world stage, fostering economic vitality and employment surges.
