Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet took a forward leap for Gujarat’s transit landscape Tuesday, approving the GMRC’s GIFT City-Shahpur metro extension. This 3.33 km elevated line, complete with three stations, carries a ₹1,067.35 crore price tag and a four-year timeline to fruition.
Ridership forecasts paint a bright picture: nearly 24,000 passengers per day by 2029, climbing to over 58,000 by 2041. It will bridge Ahmedabad and GIFT City more effectively, granting prime access to corporate giants, academic institutions, and trade hubs.
The real winners? Daily commuters whose business, employment, and learning trips will become smoother and quicker. Enhanced integration and facilities will mark a new era in passenger experience.
Economically, it’s a job engine: 1,000 construction roles upfront, 250 in maintenance thereafter, plus countless indirect gigs from ancillary activities.
The project falls under Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMC), the equal-partnered entity of India and Gujarat governments. Ahmedabad Metro’s existing 68.28 km setup, with 53 stations across operational Phases 1 (since Sept 2022) and 2 (Jan 2026), already supports 1,60,000 daily journeys.
This approval not only expands tracks but amplifies Gujarat’s vision for sustainable, inclusive growth, positioning GIFT City as a metro-powered global hub.
