Nifty and Sensex Tick Up as Foreign Buyers Remain Active
Mumbai, July 9 – The Indian equity landscape saw a gentle climb on Thursday morning, reflecting continued optimism among overseas investors. By 9:20 a.m., the Sensex recorded a gain of 336 points (0.42%) at 76,822, and the Nifty added 112 points (0.47%) to reach 23,994.35.
The momentum was not limited to blue‑chips; mid‑cap and small‑cap indices also posted healthy advances. The Nifty Mid‑Cap 100 rose 550 points (0.90%) to 61,876, while the Nifty Small‑Cap 100 climbed 181 points (0.96%) to 18,964.
Key performers included Titan, Sun Pharma, Eternal, Bharti Airtel, Asian Paints, L&T, HDFC Bank, Power Grid, BEL, M&M, Axis Bank, UltraTech Cement, Adani Ports, Kotak Mahindra Bank, SBI, ITC and HUL. Conversely, Infosys, TCS, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, Bajaj Finance and NTPC were among the laggards.
Consumer durable and real‑estate stocks were the primary engines behind the uplift, with the Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty Real Estate indices topping the gainers list. Other sectors—pharma, healthcare, media, infra, private banks and FMCG—also finished in the green, whereas IT and metal sectors slipped.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) increased their equity stakes by ₹1,963 crore on Wednesday, marking a sixth consecutive day of net buying. Domestic institutions contributed an additional ₹790.16 crore.
Regional cues were mixed: Tokyo, Bangkok and Jakarta traded higher, while Shanghai, Hong Kong and Seoul were down. In the U.S., the Dow Jones fell 1.09%, whereas the Nasdaq technology index posted a modest 0.20% rise.
The sustained foreign inflow suggests that India’s market could maintain its upward bias, provided global risk sentiment remains favourable.
