In a closely watched economic indicator, India’s retail inflation rate for March settled at 3.4 percent year-on-year, a modest rise from February’s 3.21 percent. The Ministry of Statistics dropped the update on Monday, highlighting divergent trends in essentials and luxuries.

Geographically, rural households experienced 3.63 percent inflation, slightly above urban 3.11 percent. The food basket, critical for low-income groups, inched up to 3.87 percent from 3.47 percent, with rural at 3.96 percent and urban at 3.71 percent.

Bright spots included steep drops in staple veggies: onions (-27.76%), potatoes (-18.98%), garlic (-10.18%), arhar (-9.56%), and peas/chickpeas (-7.87%). These negative rates offered tangible savings at the checkout.

Inflation hotspots were silver jewelry (148.61%), gold/diamond/platinum items (45.92%), copra (45.52%), tomatoes (35.99%), and cauliflower (34.11%), all posting strong yearly gains.

Regional variations showed Telangana at a peak of 5.83 percent, Andhra Pradesh 4.05 percent, Karnataka 3.96 percent, Tamil Nadu 3.77 percent, and Rajasthan 3.64 percent.

The methodology involves meticulous fieldwork by NSO teams, gathering live prices from 1,407 urban and 1,465 rural locations weekly. March saw full urban coverage and 99.93 percent rural, bolstering data reliability.

With inflation tame, policymakers have room to support recovery. However, volatile food prices underscore the need for supply chain resilience to prevent future spikes.
