In a major push for aerial infrastructure, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed plans for four new airports on Sunday, set to reshape the state’s remote landscapes. Locations including the river island of Majuli, Diphu, Umarangso, and Manas will soon boast modern airfields, enhancing access and strategic outreach.
Addressing the media, Sarma framed these as essential for tighter regional integration and heightened security. The developments come at a time when Assam prioritizes both civilian convenience and military readiness.
Guwahati Airport’s new terminal enters active service with landings from February 22, a development Sarma hailed as transformative. It will handle surging passenger volumes with improved efficiency, aspiring to make the city a linchpin in Northeast aviation networks.
Turning to the Moran ELF in Dibrugarh, Sarma robustly countered detractors. ‘This isn’t a tea estate—it’s a national security imperative,’ he stated, highlighting endorsements from top defense voices. Its operational continuity in monsoons amplifies its crisis-response prowess.
Sarma linked such criticisms to broader tactics by adversaries to weaken key installations, citing historical pushback on initiatives like Kaziranga. He announced expansions with more ELFs on the horizon, signaling a proactive defense posture.
Lashing out at Congress’s Gaurav Gogoi, the CM charged opposition leaders with sabotaging progress at every turn. As shovels hit the ground for these airports, Assam stands poised for an era of elevated connectivity and resilience.
