Third Petrol Price Hike in Ten Days Hits Major Cities

Oil marketing firms have delivered a third successive price revision within ten days, raising petrol by 87 paise and diesel by 91 paise per litre. The latest adjustment brings the total increase since 15 May to nearly five rupees, reflecting persistent strength in international crude benchmarks. Saturday’s revision pushed Delhi petrol to 99.51 rupees and diesel to 92.49 rupees. Across other metros the picture is equally stark: Mumbai petrol now stands at 108.49 rupees, Kolkata at 110.64 rupees, and Chennai at 105.31 rupees, with corresponding diesel rates of 95.02 rupees, 97.02 rupees, and 96.98 rupees. The upward trajectory began after conflict in West Asia lifted Brent crude above one hundred dollars for most of April and May. Two prior increases on 15 May and 19 May had already prepared the ground for Saturday’s move. Transport unions and small businesses are voicing concern over mounting operational costs, while government-aligned voices highlight that India’s retail prices remain lower than those in peer economies confronting the same global supply squeeze.
