India’s metals sector lost one of its most influential architects on Wednesday with the passing of Jatinder Mehra. After a stellar career spanning more than six decades, his death has plunged the industry into mourning, signaling the fade of a golden era.
Mehra stood out for his blend of deep technical knowledge and bold strategic thinking, consistently turning ambitious ideas into reality on an epic scale. His contributions reshaped India’s steel production capabilities.
As Essar Group’s Vice President for metals and mining, he was the driving force behind critical expansions, including Hazira’s major initiatives and the Paradip integrated steel project in Odisha. These efforts solidified Essar’s position on the global stage.
Essar paid glowing homage, remembering him as a leader of unwavering clarity and commitment. The company highlighted how his leadership defined their landmark successes, stating, ‘Essar family is devastated by the departure of a pillar whose vision built our foundations.’ They affirmed that his profound impact will steer the group for years to come.
Mehra’s earlier career in public enterprises was equally illustrious. From Executive Director at SAIL to Chairman-MD at RINL, he orchestrated the operational launch of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, a cornerstone of India’s steel ambitions.
Recognized with the Indian Steel Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, Mehra was revered as a mentor who instilled discipline and innovation in generations of industry leaders.
Today, as steel barons and workers alike reflect on his journey, Mehra’s story reminds us of the visionaries who powered India’s rise as a steel superpower. His absence leaves a gap, but his blueprint for excellence will light the way ahead.
