  • Man Arrested For Attempting To Manhandle Union Minister Giriraj Singh At Public Event In Bihar |

Bihar: The police on Saturday arrested a man after he allegedly tried to manhandle Union Minister Giriraj Singh in Bihar’s Begusarai, the BJP leader’s Lok Sabha constituency.

The accused, who was beaten up by Singh’s supporters before handing him over to the police, had come to the MP’s ‘Janta Darbar’ program with a petition. “The bearded person dressed like a Moulvi came to me with a petition and asked me to look into it. I told him that the Janta Darbar is over and he should have come on time. He then started shouting slogans against me. At one point of time, it appeared that he would physically attack me,” Singh said.

He claimed that the person was not talking in an appropriate manner. “He was overpowered by the people who had gathered there. He was handed over to the police later,” the minister said.

Begusarai Superintendent of Police Maneesh told PTI: “The person is in the custody of the police. We are investigating the matter”. Later, in a post on X, Singh said he is not going to be scared by such attacks. “Those who pamper these people on seeing their beard and cap, must see how love jihad and communal tension is being created in the entire country as well as in Begusarai,” he said.

  • ‘More Important Than Most Politicians…’: Mamata ‘Congratulates’ Amit Shah On Son Jay’s ICC Role |

In a subtle dig targeted at Amit Shah, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday shared a post on X congratulating the Union Home Minister for his son Jay Shah’s appointment as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The post has created a ripple on social media, not only as the Trinamool Congress chief addressed it to the Home Minister instead of directly congratulating Jay Shah for his appointment as ICC chief, but also because she took a subtle jibe by saying that Amit Shah’s son , despite not being a politician, has become more important than any politician.

“Congratulations, Union Home Minister!! Your son has not become a politician, but has become the ICC Chairman — a post much much more important than most politicians,” Chief Minister Banerjee wrote on elevated achievement indeed! Kudos!!” she added.

Political observers feel that from the language of the message, it is difficult to judge whether it was a congratulatory note or a subtle jibe at the Home Minister.

On August 27, Jay Shah was elected unopposed as the next Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC) replacing Greg Barclay. Shah, who has been serving as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since October 2019, and as Chair of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021, will assume the prestigious role on December 1.

Banerjee’s post is assuming importance as it came at a time when the West Bengal government led by Banerjee is drawing flak from all corners, including top BJP leaders, for the ghastly rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College. and Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month.

On Thursday itself, a lawyer practicing in the Supreme Court filed a complaint with Delhi Police against Banerjee over her ‘provocative’ remarks wherein she reportedly warned that other states might witness violence and unrest if attempts were made to create trouble in Bengal.

Addressing an event to mark the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the students’ wing of Trinamool Congress, on Wednesday, Banerjee said, “Modi babu, you are trying to create unrest in Bengal through your people. But remember, if you burn Bengal, Assam, Northeast, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi will burn too.”

According to advocate Vineet Jindal, the complainant, the Trinamool chief’s remarks were inflammatory with the potential of inciting regional hatred and enmity, thus posing a threat to national harmony and public order as a whole.

Speaking about the new roads between key cities, Gadkari said, “We are constructing a new road from Dehradun to Delhi, which will be completed by December 2024. People approach me to inquire about the tunnel route that will connect Dehradun to Mussoorie so they can buy homes there and settle down. They are willing to commute daily between Delhi and Mussoorie, as the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun will be reduced to around two hours. Discontinued. When asked whether this would spell trouble for airlines due to potential flight cancellations, Gadkari reassured that the government is constructing 100 new airports, which will provide additional business opportunities for airlines, ensuring they do not suffer.

  • Champai Soren Meets Amit Shah, To Join BJP On August 30, Confirms Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

In a significant political development, Champai Soren, a prominent Adivasi leader and former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on August 30. This news was confirmed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who took to social media to announce Soren’s upcoming induction into the party. The assembly elections for 81 Assembly seats is likely to be held in October-November this year.

“Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and a distinguished Adivasi leader of our country, Champai Soren Ji met Hon’ble Union Home Minister Amit Shah Ji a short while ago. He will officially join the BJP on 30th August in Ranchi,” tweeted Sarma.

The decision by Soren to join the BJP comes at a time when the party is actively strengthening its base in Jharkhand, a state with a significant tribal population. His inclusion in the BJP is seen as a strategic move, likely to bolster the party’s influence among the tribal communities ahead of the upcoming elections.

The development comes in a u-turn for Soren, who last week announced to float a new party. However, the BJP leaders and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma were keen on inducting the tribal leader into the saffron fold. Champai Soren was upset with the JMM after Hemant Soren removed to take back the Chief Minister’s chair after getting bail in the alleged land scam case. Hemant made Champai the Chief Minister of Jharkhand in January this year after getting arrested in the case. However, last month, he took the reign of the state in his hand once again after getting a bail in the case.

Since then, Champai Soren was sulking as he felt insulted and later he resigned from the party.

Champai Soren has been a prominent figure in Jharkhand politics, known for his strong advocacy of Adivasi rights and development. His move to join the BJP is expected to create ripples in the state’s political landscape, particularly within the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the party he has been associated with for decades.

This development underscores the BJP’s ongoing efforts to expand its footprint in tribal-dominated regions, which have traditionally been strongholds of regional parties like the JMM. The formal induction ceremony is scheduled to take place in Ranchi on August 30, and it is anticipated that several senior BJP leaders will be present to welcome Soren into the party.

The move could potentially reshape the political dynamics in Jharkhand, with the BJP aiming to consolidate its position in the state by bringing in influential leaders like Champai Soren.

  • Maharashtra Bandh Today Or Not? Know Opposition’s Stand After Bombay High Court Order |

After the Bombay High Court took a stringent view of the Maharashtra Bandh call given by the Opposition parties, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance has decided to call off their strike call for August 24.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Friday voiced his disagreement with a Bombay High Court order that restrains political parties from calling a bandh. However, he confirmed that the opposition bloc MVA has withdrawn its planned shutdown in Maharashtra on Saturday, which was in response to a sexual abuse case in a school.

During a press conference, Thackeray announced that while the MVA has called off the August 24 bandh following the High Court’s order, leaders and workers from opposition parties will still protest against the Mahayuti government by wearing black bands over their mouths across the state. The former Chief Minister, whose party is a key member of the MVA, stated that he will also participate in the protest. “We don’t agree with the High Court order on bandh,” Thackeray maintained.

Earlier in the day, the Bombay HC restrained political parties or individuals from proceeding with a Maharashtra bandh over the sexual assault incident, on August 24 or any future date, saying such a protest will paralyse normal life.

A division bench consisting of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar emphasized that if political parties and individuals were not restrained from proceeding with the planned bandh on Saturday, it could lead to significant losses—not only in terms of the economy and business but also in essential services and basic amenities, including healthcare, which must be prevented.

The MVA alliance, which includes the Shiv Sena (UBT), the Congress, and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP), had called for a statewide shutdown on August 24 to protest the alleged sexual assault of two kindergarten girls at a school in Badlapur, Thane district.

  • Kolkata Rape Murder Case: CBI To Conduct Polygraph Test On Ex-Principal Sandip Ghosh, 4 Doctors |

A special court in Kolkata on Thursday granted permission to the CBI to conduct a polygraph test on former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and four other doctors in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at the hospital, according to officials.

The CBI presented Ghosh and the four doctors, who were on duty on August 9, the day of the incident, before the special court to request authorization for the lie detection test, they said.

Officials mentioned that the polygraph test requires not only the court’s approval but also the consent of the individuals involved. The special court approved the CBI’s request. The agency has also requested to perform the polygraph test on the main accused, Sanjay Roy.

Earlier in the day, the CBI alleged in the Supreme Court that there was an attempt by the local police to cover up the rape and killing of the postgraduate medic as the crime scene was altered by the time the federal agency took over the probe. The rape and killing of the junior doctor in a seminar hall of the hospital has sparked widespread protests.

The medic’s body with severe injury marks was found inside the seminar hall of the hospital’s chest department in the morning of August 9. On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the probe from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which started its investigation on August 14.
