  • Sexual assault case: Court adjourns HD Revanna’s plea, next hearing on Friday

    Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Monday adjourned JDS MLA HD Revanna’s plea on quashing the first information report (FIR) filed against him in a case of alleged abduction of a sexual assault survivor from her home in Mysuru district.

    The high court will hear the case on Friday.

    Revanna, a former minister and son of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, was booked last month on accusations of kidnapping one of the alleged survivors of sexual abuse by his son Prajwal Revanna, who is BJPled NDA’s candidate from Hassan in this Lok Sabha election. HD Revanna is currently out on bail. He is also barred from leaving the country, entering KR Nagar in Mysuru district, from where he allegedly abducted the survivor, and interacting with the witnesses. The Karnataka High Court on Friday had raised concerns over the court’s decision to grant him bail, and had issued him an urgent notice, seeking his response to the SIT’s bail cancellation petition. Revanna’s son Prajwal, embroiled in the state’s infamous sex video case, is currently in SIT custody. The JDS MP, who is seeking reelection from Hassan as NDA candidate, had fled the country after pen drives containing sex videos allegedly involving him were distributed in his constituency days before the polling in the general election. He was arrested upon his return from Germany on Friday. A special court in the city remanded him to police custody till June 6. The SIT probing the sex abuse case is parallelly pursuing a case of abduction of a survivor by Revanna’s family. Revanna Jr’s mother Bhavani was due to be questioned on Saturday, but she has disappeared since. The SIT had issued a notice to Bhavani asking her to be present at her home on June 1 as there was a need to question her in the kidnap case.

  • Assembly election results: BJP retains Arunachal; SKM sweeps Sikkim polls

    Guwahati: BJP has captured power in Arunachal Pradesh for a third time in a row, winning 46 seats in the 60member assembly, including 10 it had already won uncontested. Congress won in only one of the 19 constituencies it contested, while National People’s Party (NPP) got five seats. NPP is an ally of BJP but fought the polls on its own.Pema Khandu is likely to continue as the state’s chief minister for the third consecutive term. Khandu and deputy CM Chowna Mein are among the BJP candidates who won unopposed. In 2019, the BJP had won 41 seats. He said the BJP would stake claim to form the government after the results of the Lok Sabha elections. BJP formed its government in Arunachal Pradesh in 2016 after Khandu, along with several MLAs, joined the party.   • Akal Takht gives ultimatum to Yogi Adityanath over rape and kidnapping of minor

    Lucknow: In Pilibhit, the kidnapping and rape case of a minor daughter of a granthi has caused the head of the Akal Takht to issue an ultimatum to UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath to expedite arrest of all the accused, also warning him that if the police fails, the Sikh community will be forced to take action at its own level.

    Out of three accused in the FIR and one unnamed accused, the police arrested two persons, including the prime accused and one unnamed accused. However, it has set aside investigation against the remaining two. However, the UP Sikh Sangat has alleged that the police is trying to help these “wealthy accused persons”. According to the police, the daughter of one Sahab Singh was kidnapped on April 28 by four persons, and a case was lodged under relevant sections. After the victim was recovered on April 30, charges of gangrape and sections 5/6 of the Pocso Act were also added. On May 10, the prime accused Sumit was arrested but based on electronic evidence recovered from the accused and the victim, statements and other evidence, it was discovered that no case was being made against the two more accused named in the FIR Hariom and Varun . Further, on the basis of investigation, the fourth unnamed person was identified as one Anup who was arrested on May 30.

    However, the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee, a representative organisation of all Sikhs, on Thursday posted a statement by the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Raghbir Singh who said that the UP Sikh Sangat has alleged that the local police was helping some “wealthy accused persons” and the police had stated that no action would be taken against them.

  • prajwal revanna arrest: Prajwal Revanna lands at Bengaluru airport; taken into custody by SIT

    Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, accused of sexual harassment, returned to India from Munich on Thursday at around midnight. His flight landed at the Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru.

    He has been taken into custody by the SIT authorities.

    Prajwal Revanna is facing a probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Karnataka government over allegations of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation following a complaint by a woman who worked in his household. He had reportedly left for Germany on April 27, a day after Hassan went to pollsRevanna, earlier on May 28, filed an application for anticipatory bail as he is set to return to India on Friday. Notably, his anticipatory bail plea was filed hours after the SIT arrested two prime accused in connection with the case. The arrested have been identified as Naveen Gowda and Chetan, ANI reported.

    Moreover, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that action has been initiated to revoke the diplomatic passport of Revanna, adding that he has to reply to the show cause notice issued on May 23.

    Congress MP DK Suresh before the arrival of the Hassan MP said, “He (Prajwal Revann) has already mentioned that he is attending SIT tomorrow. The SIT will take care of that.”

    Youth Congress president Mohammed Haris Nalapad accused the BJP of helping Revanna ‘go outside’ the country.

    “The program of Prajwal Revanna to go outside India is sponsored by BJP. On the day of the 26th of May after polling, he was sent immediately with a diplomatic passport outside…The BJP, Narendra Modi ji, Amit Shah ji and our Yediyurappa ji all planned together and sent to Prajwal Revanna outside,” he said.

    Six rebel Congress MLAs of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, who were disqualified from Congress after defying the party during Rajya Sabha polls joined BJP in Delhi on March 23. The MLAs are Sudhir Sharma, Ravi Thakur, Rajinder Rana, Inder Dutt Lakhanpal, Chetanya Sharma, and Devinder Kumar Bhutto. While speaking to the media after joining the BJP, former Congress MLAs attacked the state government and said it's on the ventilator and the Himachal govt will collapse. Newly joined BJP leader Inder Dutt Lakhanpal said the functionality of INC has broken while Davinder Kumar Bhutto said the Himachal govt will collapse and Rajinder Rana said the Himachal government is on the ventilator. “The functionality of the INC has been broken. Neither is there any influence of the High Command nor is there any respect left for the party workers… They nominated that person for the Rajya Sabha from Himachal, who is known to have fought against the rights of our state in the SC,” said BJP leader Inder Dutt Lakhanpal.

    The BJP remained a major beneficiary of electoral bonds purchased by big corporate groups like Vedanta, Bharti Airtel, Muthoot, Baja Auto, Jindal group and TVS Motor, according to an analysis of data released by the Election Commission on Thursday. The Election Commission made public a fresh data set of electoral bonds, including their alphanumeric numbers that can help match their purchasers with the political parties that received the funds.

    Vedanta group gave donations to BJP, Congress, BJD and TMC while Bharti Airtel donated to BJP, RJD, SAD, Congress, and Janata Dal (United).

    Muthoot donated to BJP, NCP Maharahstra Pradesh, Bajaj group to BJP and AAP, Apollo Tires to Congress, Keventers to BJP and Congress. Industrialist Lakshmi Niwas Mittal donated to the BJP, while Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar Shaw donated to BJP, TMC and Congress.

    Rungta Sons Private Limited donated to Congress, BJP, TMC and Sikkim Krantikari Morcha.

    Pharmaceutical companies Piramal Capital and Sun Pharma donated to the BJP while Torrent Pharmaceutical Limited donated to BJP, AAP and Congress, Natco Pharma gave donations to BJP, TDP, TMC and BRS.

    Earlier in the day, after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal skipped the ED summons, Gopal Rai accused the BJP of pressuring the probe agencies to send summons to the AAP chief.

    “The summons are politically motivated. ED and CBI send summons due to pressure from the BJP. The Delhi CM has time and again said that it is illegal. ED approached the court, saying that the summons was legal. The court granted bail to Arvind Kejriwal). Why are they so restless to send summonses again and again. Let the court decide if it is illegal or legal,” Gopal Rai told on Monday.This came after Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal did not appear before. the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in connection with the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) money laundering probe on Monday.Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party lashed out at the Delhi CM and said that the Delhi Jal Board case is bigger than the liquor scam.

    Kejriwal has so far skipped eight previous summons issued by the ED in the Delhi Excise Policy case on March 4, February 26, February 19, February 2, January 18, January 3, November 2 and December 22, calling them “illegal and politically motivated. .”

    The ED wants to record Kejriwal's statement in the case on issues like the formulation of policy, meetings held before it was finalized, and allegations of bribery.
