  • PCC brass blames BJP govt for institutional and constitutional collapse in Manipur

New Delhi: Renewed violence has led to “an institutional and constitutional collapse” in Manipur, said state Congress leaders, who blamed the Modi government for the situation. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate, meanwhile, demanded the sacking of Union home minister Amit Shah over continuing violence in the northeastern state.

Addressing an AICC briefing here, Manipur Congress chief Keisham Meghchandra Singh said the unrest intensified since September 1, with aggressors using sophisticated weapons to carry out attacks.

“The use of highly sophisticated weapons, drones and RPGs and bombings in various places have resulted in civilian deaths, while many others have been hospitalized… PM remains unconcerned about Manipur,” Singh said.Congress MP from Inner Manipur A Bimol Akoijam said the state was witnessing a situation which was unprecedented in independent India.

  • Supreme Court stays defamation case against Congress leader Shashi Tharoor

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has stayed trial court proceedings in a criminal defamation case against Congress leader Shashi Tharoor over a “scorpion sitting on a Shivling” remark made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.

A bench comprising justices Hrishikesh Roy and R Mahadevan noted that the remark by Tharoor was not his original statement but was first made by another person in an article published in a magazine in 2012.

“Eventually, it is a metaphor. The metaphor would refer to the invincibility of the person who is spoken about. Can the metaphor not be understood as pointing out the invincibility of the person,” justice Roy verbally asked. When the complainant’s counsel responded that the remark can be perceived as “can’t live with, can’t live without”, justice Roy wondered “I don’t know why somebody has taken objection to this”. The judge said a metaphor is capable of being understood in many ways.

The development took place during the hearing of Tharoor’s challenge to a Delhi High Court order in which his plea for quashing the defamation case was rejected. Aggrieved, Tharoor moved SC.

  • It’s like treason to hurt nation’s image abroad: BJP on Rahul Gandhi’s statement in US

New Delhi: The BJP on Monday strongly reacted to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s statement regarding the BJP and RSS in the US and said the leader of the Opposition was trying to harm the country’s image abroad.

“Rahul Gandhi is the leader of the Opposition. The LoP is also answerable for the country. Harming the image of the country abroad is a treasonlike crime. No patriot can do this,” Union agriculture and rural development minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told. media persons in Delhi. Responding to Gandhi’s criticism of the RSS, Chouhan said that every Swayam Sewak of the RSS has dedicated their life to the country and is working for the nation. Union textile minister Giriraj Singh said Rahul Gandhi was praising China while being abroad. “Instead of praising India, he (Rahul Gandhi) is going abroad and abusing India and praising China. It seems like he is thriving on China’s money and they are going abroad and branding China,” Singh said.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said. “Gandhi and his ‘ecosystem’ want to talk against India and abuse the BJP, RSS and all nationalist organizations.”

  • Haryana assembly elections: BJP struggling to placate disgruntled state leaders

Top BJP leaders, including Haryana CM Nayab Saini and former chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, have reached out to party rebels in Haryana, with limited success as they are adamant on contesting the assembly polls.

Already faced with the uphill task of retaining power in Haryana, the BJP’s first list of 67 candidates added to its woes as more than a dozen leaders turned rebels while former minister Ranjit Singh Chautala and Ratia MLA Lakshman Das Napa resigned from the party.

BJP’s farmer wing chief Sukhwinder Sheoran and its OBC chief Karan Dev Kamboj also quit the party as they were denied tickets. Kamboj was eyeing a ticket from Indri. After his resignation, Saini reached out to him but Kamboj made his anger visible to Saini by not even shaking hands with him. On Sunday, Khattar met several disgruntled party leaders in Haryana. The BJP state leaders’ attempts to reach out to these rebels are not yielding much result as Kamboj has met Congress leader Bhupender Singh Hooda in Delhi.Similarly, sports minister and MLA from Sohna, Sanjay Singh, also indicated that he would contest elections as BJP. denied him a ticket. Famed singer Kanhaiya Mittal has also distanced himself from BJP as the party didn’t consider his request for a ticket. He is now eyeing to join the Congress. Saini and several top leaders of the BJP are reaching out to disgruntled leaders to calm them and keep them in the party fold.

To balance the caste equation with more emphasis on OBCs, the BJP on Wednesday had announced 67 candidates. The list incudes 16 OBCs, 13 Jats, 13 SCs, 9 Brahmins, 8 Punjabis, 5 Baniyas, two Rajputs and a Sikh. Besides trying to balance the caste equations, the party has also made space for turncoats, which has not gone well with the party workers. The party has also tried to keep some of the prominent faces, who have switched to the BJP in the last decade or so like Rao Inderjit Singh and Kuldeep Bishnoi in good humor by taking them in the loop while deciding the tickets in their areas of influence. .

Haryana power minister Ranjit Chautala convened a meeting of his supporters at Rania before announcing his decision. He had contested from Hisar Lok Sabha on a BJP ticket but lost. He was replaced with Shishpal Kamboj. BJP leader Shamsher Singh Kharkhara, contested from Meham in 2019, but lost and quit the party after he was denied the ticket. The BJP has fielded former Indian kabaddi team captain Deepak Hooda from Meham. Former MLA Bachan Singh Arya has also resigned from the BJP after JJP rebel Ram Kumar Gautam fielded from Safidon in Jind. Gautam was sitting MLA from Narnaund.

Former Haryana minister Kavita Jain burst into tears after the party replaced her with Nikhil Madan from Sonepat. Madan recently switched to the BJP.

Similarly, supporters of former minister Savitri Jindal, mother of Kurukshetra BJP MP Naveen Jindal, urged her to contest as an Independent from Hisar. The BJP has fielded its sitting MLA Kamal Gupta from here.

  • J&K polls: Talat Majeed, former Jama’ateIslami member joins Assembly Elections

Dr Talat Majeed, a former member of the banned Jama’ateIslami J&K, is contesting the Pulwama Assembly constituency as an independent candidate in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. Historically, Jama’ateIslami members have adhered to a policy of nonparticipation in elections, a stance maintained since 1987. The party was also part of the separatist Hurriyat Conference from 1993 to 2003, during which it advocated for election boycotts. .

  • Third Eye: Caught in serial complaints, wait getting longer, all in the Family

The Uttarakhand Congress unit is in a restive mood. A little birdie says the AICC has received a slew of complaints from many state Congress leaders and MLAs against the style of functioning of Uttarakhand PCC president Karan Mahara. After failing to open the account in the Lok Sabha polls, the state Congress won two key assembly byelections in Badrinath and Manglaur recently in the BJPruled state. But instead of these victories making the PCC president popular internally, the serial complaints against Mahara are making the AICC brass skeptical about his continuation and looking to replace him.

There is much speculation on the report of the 79th round of the National Sample Survey which was expected to be published last month but is yet to see the light of day. Several ministries, in fact, have already prepared data points on its findings and are only waiting for the Ministry of Statistical & Program Implementation to release the report.

Looks like there is going to be a fight within the clan of former PM Devi Lal. With JJP announcing Digvijay Chautala as its nominee from Dabwali assembly in Haryana, BJP is fielding Aditya Chautala (Devi Lal) from there and Congress is likely to field MLA Amit Sihag. These three candidates are related to each other. While Digvijay and Aditya are greatgrandson and grandson of former Devi Lal, Amit Sihag is also from the extended family of the former PM.

  • SC reserves verdict on Arvind Kejriwal’s pleas

The Supreme Court has reserved its verdict on pleas filed by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal seeking bail and challenging his arrest by CBI for his alleged involvement in the Delhi excise policy case.

Senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal, said his arrest was nothing but an “insurance arrest”, implying that CBI arrested him only to ensure that even if the CM gets bail in the ED case, he remains behind bars in CBI case.

The CBI counsel alleged the Punjab government, at Kejriwal’s behest, has denied sanction to prosecute some state officials who allegedly armtwisted the owner of a Punjabbased distillery to comply with the alleged bribe demands. The counsel said the probe regarding that is stalled since the AAP government there hasn’t given sanction under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act.The bench verbally asked CBI counsel whether the distillery owner was a witness. Reply in the negative, the counsel said witnesses in Goa had refused to come forward to record their statement before Kejriwal was arrested, adding the witnesses recorded their statements only after Kejriwal’s arrest. “If Kejriwal is released on bail, the witnesses may turn hostile.”

The CBI counsel objected to Kejriwal’s pleas, arguing that he had bypassed the trial court and straight away approached SC. The counsel contended that Kejriwal has failed to prove that his is an exceptional case which warrants a direct hearing from SC. The counsel said grant of bail to Kejriwal would amount to demoralizing high court. But SC disagreed with this contention.

Singhvi said it would be unfair to relegate Kejriwal back to trial court when issues arising in the present bail case have been extensively argued before the trial court in a related matter. He added almost every other accused arrested by ED and CBI has been given bail, except Kejriwal.

  • BJP: Third Eye: Wrong numbers, apologies, and smog concerns amid election season

When A Mobile Number Becomes A Trouble NumberBJP is urging people to give a missed call on a mobile number provided by the party to either become a member or renew their membership. However, during training programs some party workers jumbled up the digits in the number, giving trouble to a few ordinary citizens. A party worker from Begusarai in Bihar ended up dialing a Gurgaon woman. Within a day, she received 10,000 calls asking her to register as a BJP member. The party says the error has been rectified. Similarly, a personal assistant of a former Congress leader with a similar mobile number is also receiving calls for BJP membership. Sidda All Praise for BJP LeaderChief minister Siddaramaiah is all praise for BJP’s deputy leader of Opposition Aravind Bellad, an outandout government critic. Bellad, while attacking the CM recently, made a reference to his father. It could have gone unnoticed. But, Bellad realized his mistake and wrote a letter of apology to the chief minister. The gesture has been widely appreciated.Election & Smog… A Coincidence Haryana’s election calendar may coincide with DelhiNCR’s annual smog season. The state goes to polls on October 4 and results will be declared on October 8. It is also harvest time, with farm fires picking up pace by midOctober. With model code of conduct already in force, the worry is whether there will be enough enforcement — both before and after elections.

  • ICICI Bank’s clarification on Sebi Chief’s salary raises more questions: Congress

Responding to ICICI Bank’s statement concerning payments made to Sebi chief Madhabi Puri Buch, the Congress on Tuesday claimed that the bank’s clarification raised more questions than it answered. Addressing a press conference, party spokesperson Pawan Khera pointed out that Puri Buch retired from ICICI Bank in 2013 and she was provided ₹5.03 crore. He said, assuming this was her retirement due which was settled in 201415, how come the pension started again in 201617 when Buch became a fulltime member of Sebi. He said she was not given anything by the bank in 201516.

Terming PuriBuch’s pension as “miracle pension”, Khera pointed out that she was paid a pension more than double her salary. He pointed out that the average annual salary of Puri Buch was ₹1.3 crore, while her average annual pension amounted to ₹2.77 crore. Khera demanded ICICI and Puri Buch to explain why her pension restarted in 2017, which coincided with her becoming a fulltime Sebi member.

ICICI Bank issued a clarification via a notice to the stock exchange, asserting that the payments made to Buch after her exit from the bank were purely retirement benefits, not salary or employee stock options. The Congress leader countered ICICI’s clarification that employees, including retired ones, had the option to exercise Esops up to ten years postvesting. Citing ICICI’s publicly disclosed Esop policy, which allows former employees to exercise their options within a maximum of three months posttermination, Khera asked, “Where is this ‘revised policy’ under which Madhabi Puri Buch was able to exercise Esops eight years after her voluntary termination?”

Khera also raised concerns about ICICI Bank paying the TDS on Buch’s Esops on her behalf. He questioned whether this protocol is followed for all employees or if Buch received preferential treatment.

  • Congress says Sebi chief drawing salary from ICICI; Bank denies

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday charged Securities & Exchange Board of India (Sebi) chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch of receiving remuneration from private entities such as ICICI Bank and ICICI Prudential even while heading the regulatory body.

Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that Buch received ?16.8 crore from ICICI since joining Sebi in 2017. While Khera refused to divulge the source of this information saying Buch should prove the figures are wrong, he added that this amount was 5.09 times more than her salary. of ?3.3 crore from Sebi during the corresponding time frame.

Hours later, ICICI Bank refuted the charges and it has not paid any salary or granted ESOPs to Buch after her retirement.”ICICI Bank or its group companies have not paid any salary or granted any ESOPs to Madhabi Puri Buch after her retirement, other than her retirement benefits. It may be noted that she had opted for superannuation with effect from October 31, 2013,” the bank said in a statement.

During her employment with the ICICI Group, she received compensation in the form of salary, retirement benefits, bonus and ESOPs, in line with applicable policies, it added.

“Under the bank’s ESOP rules, the ESOPs vest over the next few years from the date of allotment. As per rules existing at the time of her ESOP grant, employees, including retired employees, had the choice to exercise their ESOPs anytime up to a period of 10 years from the date of vesting,” it said.Khera’s comments follow a series of allegations by the USbased short seller Hindenburg Research. On August 10, Hindenburg accused Puri Buch and her husband of making investments in obscure offshore funds, which it claimed were used in the “Adani money siphoning scandal.”(With PTI inputs)
