  • FSAAI approves proposal for bolder labelling of sugar, salt and saturated fat on packaged food items | Company News

New Delhi: In a historic move, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has approved a proposal to make a bolder and bigger display of nutritional information regarding total sugar, salt and saturated fat on packaged food items, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) said on Saturday.

The proposal calls for packaged food items to carry the amount of total sugar, salt and saturated fat “in bold letters and relatively increased font size.” The Ministry noted that “the information regarding per serve percentage contribution to Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) would be given in bold letters for total sugar, total saturated fat and sodium content.”

The decision which will amend the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 was taken in the 44th meeting of the Food Authority. Regulation 2 (v) and 5(3) specify requirements to mention serving size and nutritional information on the food product label, respectively.

“The amendment aims to empower consumers to better understand the nutritional value of the product they are consuming and make healthier decisions,” the MoHFW said. Healthcare and nutritional experts have been calling out the need to curb the intake of packaged food items, rich in sugar, salt and saturated fats — a major reason for the rising incidences of non-communicable Diseases (NCDs).

The proposal will enable “people to make healthier choices as well as contribute towards efforts to combat NCDs and promote public health and well-being.” The FSSAI is also expected to share the draft notification for the said amendment in the public domain for inviting suggestions and objections.

Further, FSSAI has been issuing advisories from time to time to prevent false and misleading claims such as ‘Health Drink’, ‘100% fruit juices’, the use of the term wheat flour/ refined wheat flour, the advertisement and marketing of ORS along with prefix or suffix, nutrient function claim for multi-source edible vegetable oils etc.

These advisories and directives are issued to prevent misleading claims by FBOs, MoHFW said.

  • IND vs ZIM: World champion India was defeated by Zimbabwe by 13 runs in the first T20 match, except captain Gill and Sundar, no one else’s bat worked

IND vs ZIM: The host team has won the first match of the five-match T20 series between India and Zimbabwe by 13 runs. In this match played at Harare Sports Club, India won the toss and decided to bowl first. After which Zimbabwe set a target of 116 runs in front of India in the stipulated 20 overs, but the Indian team could score only 102 runs for 10 wickets in 19.5 overs. Team India has to face defeat just 7 days after becoming the world champion. This was Zimbabwe’s third win against India in T20I.

8 batsmen of the Indian team could not even touch the double digit in terms of runs. Zimbabwe had put 115 runs on the scoreboard while playing first, but when India came to chase the target, more than half of the team had returned to the pavilion within 50 runs. At one time India’s score was 47 runs for 6 wickets. Although a small but important partnership of 23 runs between Avesh Khan and Washington Sundar raised Team India’s hopes, the Zimbabwean team seemed in a different mood. Captain Sikandar Raza created the most problems for India, who took 3 wickets for 25 runs in 4 overs.

This is India’s first defeat in T20 cricket in 2024

It is worth noting that Team India has not yet suffered any defeat in T20 matches in the year 2024. At the same time, India became the world champion by remaining undefeated in the T20 World Cup. Talking about 2024, the Indian team has clean swept Afghanistan apart from remaining undefeated in the T20 World Cup. But Zimbabwe has now become the first team to defeat Team India in a T20 match in 2024. At the same time, Shubman Gill’s captaincy career has started with a defeat.

  • India’s Foreign Exchange Reserves Lightly Off All-Time Highs; Declines by USD 1.71 billion in latest week | Economy News

New Delhi: India’s foreign exchange reserves declined by USD 1.713 billion to USD 651.997 billion during the week that ended June 28, official data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) showed on Friday. The reserves are currently a tad lower than their all-time highs of USD 655.817 touched recently.

India’s foreign exchange reserves jumped to touch a new lifetime high during the week that ended June 7. The reserves have been rising on and off for a long time now. So far in 2024, they have risen about USD 30 billion, on a cumulative basis.

According to the latest data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India’s foreign currency assets (FCA), the biggest component of the forex reserves, declined by USD 1.252 billion to USD 572.881 billion. Gold reserves during the week declined by USD 427 million to USD 56.528 billion.

India’s foreign exchange reserves are now sufficient to cover around 11 months of projected imports, according to a recent RBI report. In the calendar year 2023, the RBI added about USD 58 billion to its foreign exchange kitty. In 2022, India’s forex kitty slumped by USD 71 billion cumulatively.

Forex reserves, or foreign exchange reserves (FX reserves), are assets that are held by a nation’s central bank or monetary authority. It is generally held in reserve currencies, usually the US Dollar and, to a lesser degree, the Euro, Japanese Yen, and Pound Sterling.

The country’s foreign exchange reserves last touched their all-time high in October 2021. Much of the decline after that can be attributed to a rise in the cost of imported goods in 2022. Also, the relative fall in forex reserves could be linked to the RBI’s intervention, from time to time, in the market to defend the uneven depreciation in the rupee against a surging US dollar.

Typically, the RBI, from time to time, intervenes in the market through liquidity management, including through the sale of dollars, to prevent a steep depreciation in the rupee.
