On the other hand, Bangladesh batted more cautiously in the second innings than the first innings, but Ashwin was successful in impressing with his bowling. While Bumrah gave India its first success in the second innings, Ashwin gave three more blows to Bangladesh by the end of the day’s play.

  • ‘Malinga Bana Hua Hai’: Virat Kohli’s Hilarious Chat With Shakib Al Hasan Goes Viral – WATCH | cricket news

A hilarious exchange between Virat Kohli and Shakib Al Hasan went viral on social media during Day 2 of the first Test match between India and Bangladesh in Chennai. Kohli came out to bat after India lost two quick wickets in their second innings and looked in good form before getting out to Mehidy Hasan Miraz. During his time at the crease, the stump mic picked up Kohli jokingly calling Shakib ‘Malinga’ after the Bangladeshi bowler delivered a series of yorkers. The playful reference was a nod to the legendary Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga.

After India bowled Bangladesh out for just 149, thanks in part to their lower order, the hosts had posted 376 in their first innings, extending their lead to 308 and showcasing their dominance over the visitors on Day 2 at MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed on Friday admitted that losing too many wickets in the first 10 overs of their first innings against “world class” Indian bowlers has put his side on the backfoot in the opening Test against India. In reply to India’s first innings total of 376, Bangladesh were all out for 149 in 47.1 overs on the second day, with Shakib Al Hasan (32) being their top scorer. They lost three wickets in the first 10 overs and scored 27 runs.

“Overall, our batting was a little bit disappointing. Yeah, there is some help for the fast bowlers, but still, we could have done much better than that. So yeah, we are disappointed,” Ahmed said at the press conference after the day’s play.

“We also lost too many wickets in the first 10 (overs), which cost us our game.” (Virat Kohli’s DRS Blunder: Rohit Sharma And Umpire’s Reaction During IND vs BAN 1st Test Goes Viral, See Pics)

India were 81 for 3 in their second innings at stumps for an overall lead of 308 runs. Ahmed, who took three wickets in India’s first innings and one in the second, also felt that his side’s less experience of playing with the SG balls did not help their cause either. Bangladesh players are mostly used to playing with the Kookaburra balls which have a flatter seam compared to the SG.

“Also, playing with the SG ball is a challenge. The Indians play with SG ball since childhood, so they know how to use it properly, giving them a huge advantage,” said the 29-year-old right-arm pacer.

“We also made some mistakes with the new ball. What I felt about the SG ball and this condition is that there were some challenges, especially for the first 10-12 overs. India is a formidable side against any opponent at home. And tries to make the most out of the home advantage, the same as we will do when we play at home soon.”

As far as bowling is concerned, he said his side bowled well overall. (IND vs BAN: Virat Kohli Matches Sachin Tendulkar In International Record)

“Yes, yesterday we started well, and at the end of the day, (Ravichandran) Ashwin and (Ravindra) Jadeja batted well. Also, this morning, we had a good session, and then we finished them all in 37 runs by taking Four more wickets. So overall, we bowled well. Yesterday, there was more help than today.”

Ahmed gave credit to the Indian bowlers for their consistent line and length. (Rishabh Pant’s Apologetic Gesture To Angry Mohammed Siraj After DRS Error, Video Goes Viral – Watch)

“No doubt they all are world-class. They were more consistent with their line and lengths, and there were plenty of variations in the Indian bowling attack,” he said.

On their historic Test win in Pakistan, Ahmed said, “We played overall good cricket in Pakistan, and Test cricket is something you need to be good in your department in every session. But, conditions are different here.”

Ahmed said his team is still work in progress.

“Everyone (in the team) is concerned about it and is working on it. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, but there is no limit to getting better. While we are trying to improve on it by giving our utmost, at the end of the day, it all boils down to how we execute our plans,” he signed off. (With PTI Inputs)

  • India Cruise Into Asian Champions Trophy Final As Harmanpreet Singh Strikes Twice In 4-1 Victory Over South Korea | Other

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh’s sublime form resulted in twin strikes as defending champions India entered the final of the Hero Asian Champions Trophy with a clinical 4-1 win against South Korea in the semi-final on Monday. India scored through Uttam Singh (13th minute), skipper Harmanpreet Singh (19th, 45th) and Jarmanpreet Singh (32nd), while Korea’s lone goal came from through Yang Jihun (33rd)’s penalty corner conversion.

India will take on hosts China in Tuesday’s final. Earlier in the day, China defeated Pakistan 2–0 via shoot-out in the first semifinal after the two teams finished 1–1 at the end of regulation 60 minutes. In the previous league stage encounter between the two finalists, India prevailed 3–0.

Pakistan and Korea will face off in the third place classification match which will also be played on Tuesday. Meanwhile in the fifth-sixth place classification match, Japan beat Malaysia 4-2 in shoot-out following a 4-4 stalemate in normal time.

In the second semifinal as expected, the Indians started on the offensive and tested the Korean defense with persistent attacks from the word go. The Koreans, on the other hand, were contending to sit back and defend and rely on sporadic counter attacks.

Abhishek came tantalizingly close to handing India the lead in the fourth minute but his reverse hit was brilliantly saved by Korean goalkeeper Kim Jaehan. The Indian made promising build ups and penetrated the Korean circle on consistent basis in the first quarter.

India’s attacking intent finally paid off in the 13th minute when Uttam positioned himself at the right place at the right time to tap in Araijeet Singh Hundal’s supply from the right. A minute from the first break, Korea secured back-to-back penalty corners but failed to utilize the chances.

Four minutes into the second quarter, India secured their first penalty corner and Harmanpreet scored his sixth goal of the tournament to hand his side a 2-0 lead. At the stroke of half-time, custodian Suraj Karkera came out of his line to save an effort from the opposition player.

India continued in the same vein after the change of ends and extended their lead two minutes into the third quarter. A brilliant scoop from Sumit from the right finds Jarmanpreet just outside the circle on the left flank and the latter neatly collected the ball and took a step or two to get inside the circle and slap the ball into the Korean goal to extend India’s lead.

But Korea pulled one back a minute later from a penalty corner through the tournament’s top-scorer Yang Jihun. The goal hardly bothered the Indians as they continued their attacking game and dominated the share of exchanges.

With a second left for the third quarter, India secured another penalty corner when Korean goalkeeper Jaehan was shown the yellow card for handling the ball out side the circle, and Harmanpreet made no mistake to extend the lead.

Eight minutes from the final hooter, India’s second goalkeeper Karkera made a fine double save to deny Park Cheoleon, but the Koreans secured a penalty corner which went in vain. Thereafter, it was controlled show from the Indians as they defended their lead with consummate ease to march into their fifth final appearance in the tournament.

  • Mohun Bagan, Mumbai To Renew Rivalry As ISL Kicks Off Season With Maidan ‘Big Three’ | Other

Last season’s finalists Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC will renew their rivalry as they kick off the 11th ISL here on Friday, marking the start of a new chapter with Kolkata Maidan’s ‘Big Three’ now competing in India’s top-tier football competition.

Mohammedan SC have joined their city rivals and two other century-plus old clubs Mohun Bagan and East Bengal in the Indian Super League this season.

Mohammedan Sporting secured promotion after winning the I-League last season, and the 103-year-old club will be eager to quickly adapt to the demands of top-flight football.

Mohun Bagan were the first to join the ISL, in 2020, following their merger with ATK, forming ATK Mohun Bagan.

Since their entry, the Mariners have been consistent and always seen as title contenders, including last season when they became the league champions by winning the Shield but lost to Mumbai City FC in the final for the ISL Cup.

East Bengal joined the top-tier league soon after Mohun Bagan through a separate consortium. Their entry completed the transition of Kolkata’s two most famous clubs from the I-League to the ISL, reigniting the century-old rivalry at the highest level of Indian football.

With the addition of Mohammedan Sporting, the Maidan will now witness the ‘Big Three’ of Kolkata battling it out in the ISL, adding a new layer of competition and excitement to the league, which is now bigger with 13 teams.

The opener between Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City promises to set the tone for an exhilarating season.

Mohun Bagan and MCFC shared the top honors between them in the last couple of seasons.

Mohun Bagan have strengthened their attack with the signing of Australian all-time A-League top scorer Jamie Maclaren who is dealing with an injury at the moment.

But their defense has been struggling since Indian central defender Anwar Ali’s acrimonious transfer to East Bengal, while the duo of Brendan Hamill and Hector Yuste have also parted ways.

The challenge for head coach Jose Molina will be to develop new dynamics.

The Islanders have won the ISL League Shield and ISL Cup twice with all of these triumphs coming in the last four seasons.

Captain Rahul Bheke, midfielder Apuia, midfielder Alberto Noguera and striker Jorge Pereyra Diaz have been the biggest stars to leave the team.

But MCFC have brought in Brandon Fernandes, Jeremy Manzorro, Jon Toral, TP Rehenesh, Nikolaos Karelis, Hitesh Sharma and Sahil Panwar and the key for Petr Kratky would be to combine them well.

The 2024–25 season promises to be more open and competitive, with NorthEast United FC setting the tone with a thrilling victory in the season-opening Durand Cup recently.

Down 0-2 to Mohun Bagan at half time in front of a partisan crowd at the Salt Lake Stadium, the John Abraham-owned team mounted a stunning comeback, leveling the score by the hour mark and then edged out the home favorites 4-3. in a dramatic penalty shootout to win their first ever title a decade after the club’s inception.

Juan Pedro Benali’s team, which narrowly missed the playoffs last season, will look to build on the Durand Cup success.

The team parted ways with Tomi Juric, their top ISL scorer from last season, who made a notable impact despite limited appearances.

However, they have bolstered their attack by signing Guillermo Fernandez and Aleaddine Ajaraie, who contributed significantly to their Durand Cup triumph.

    SHADOW OF ANWAR ALI

    ,

The shadow of Anwar Ali’s four-month ban and Rs 12.90 crore fine, which has to be borne by the player, his parent club Delhi FC and East Bengal, will loom large on the red-and-gold.

One of the finest Indian defenders, Ali was found guilty of breaching his contract with Mohun Bagan by the Players Status Committee of the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

Mohammedan Sporting face a tough season ahead due to the departure of key players Eddie Hernandez and David Lalhansanga.

They have bolstered their squad with Indian talents like Sajad Hussain Parray, Makan Chothe, and Gaurav Bora, along with star signing Cesar Manzoki from the UAE Pro League and Brazilian striker Franca.

Head coach Andrey Chernyshov was retained after the I-League success and the Russian would be expected to weave his magic in the ISL now.

Last season’s semifinalists FC Goa will enter with renewed optimism under the leadership of head coach Manolo Marquez, who will juggle his club duties with his national team job.

They recently won the Bandodkar Trophy, where they showed their strength against international teams like Brisbane Roar and Defensa y Justicia.

The Gaurs have retained their core and added strategic reinforcements, positioning themselves as strong contenders.

Chennaiyin FC had an active transfer window, adding young forwards, while Bengaluru FC, in what might be Sunil Chhetri’s final season, will also push to challenge for playoff success.

Sergio Lobera’s Odisha FC have also made rapid strides, including winning the Super Cup, and the Spaniard would look to add to their solitary title.

The squad gets a significant boost with the addition of Hugo Boumous, who reunites with coach Lobera after their successful collaborations at FC Goa and Mumbai City FC.

Kerala Blasters may struggle due to a weakened squad after the departure of Jeakson Singh (East Bengal) and tactician Ivan Vukomanovic.

All eyes will also be on Indian coach Khalid Jamil at Jamshedpur FC who will look to rebuild after a late-season collapse last time.

Hyderabad FC are the weakest in the tournament and endured financial instability in the build-up to the season. They will face an uphill task.

    Match kicks off at 7.30pm.
